American actor Mahershala Ali made history at the 89th Academy Awards by becoming the first Muslim to ever win an Oscar for acting. The Best Supporting Actor trophy was awarded for his role in the film “Moonlight“, which went on to take home the award for Best Motion Picture at the ceremony.

In a poignant acceptance speech, Ali thanked his newborn daughter and wife, expressing gratitude to her for “being a soldier throughout this prcocess and carrying both of us through.“

Born in Oakland, California on February 16, 1974, Ali, whose birth name is Mahershalalhashbaz Gilmore, converted to Islam in 1999 while attending NYU. That led a fall out with his mother, an ordained minister, who didn't approve of his decision.

He later said they were able to reconcile and put their differences aside in order to have a normal relationship.

Earlier this year, Ali also won a Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Moonlight“.
