Turkey’s troops hoisted their national flag in the northern Iraqi region of Zap on Saturday, in the context of the ongoing operation against Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) terrorists in the region.
A large number of PKK terrorists were neutralized by commando forces, who restored law and order to the Zap region of Mount Kokozer, which has been infiltrated by terrorists.
Security and Terror Specialist Abdullah Ağar shared a photo of a Turkish flag being hoisted on Mount Kokozer on his personal social media account.
The operation is the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF)’s first land move in Zap in nine years. The previous one, “Operation Sun,” took place in 2008 and was carried out to destroy PKK camps in the region.
Operation Sun, which was launched on Feb. 21 2008, carried the name of the then-three-year-old daughter of a fallen martyr, Infantry Officer Kasım Aksoy, who is called “Güneş,” meaning sun in Turkish.
A total of 240 PKK terrorists were neutralized in the context of Operation Sun.
The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States. The PKK has been conducting armed violence in the southeastern part of Turkey since 1984. More than 40,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the three-decade long conflict.
