Global Wind Day is being celebrated on Saturday in recognition of the power of wind and the possibilities it holds to reshape the world's energy systems.

Global Wind Day is a worldwide annual event on June 15 marked by a series of activities to raise public awareness of climate change and the shift away from carbon-based energy to renewables like wind.

"Wind energy is more important than ever to power economic development and achieve climate action goals," WindEurope, an industry group that promotes the day, said in a statement.

Locally, Turkey ranked sixth among the European continent’s 38 countries for additional installed wind capacity in 2018, said WindEurope data this February.

Turkey added 467 megawatts (MW) in 2018 to reach a total of 7,369 MW installed capacity, according to the Wind Energy in Europe in 2018 Trends and Statistics report.

The Turkish wind energy sector attracted $12.3 billion over the past 11 years, the Turkish Wind Energy Association (TUREB) said in December, raising Turkey's installed capacity from around 146 MW in 2007 to some 6,500 MW today.

For Global Wind Day, WindEurope stressed that wind energy is playing a growing role in the world’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

"Wind power is contributing to global development and climate goals by creating jobs, decreasing carbon emissions, stimulating local investment and decreasing energy poverty," it added.

Giles Dickson, WindEurope’s CEO, also warned of the danger of climate change, adding:

"Climate change is at the top of the political agenda in a way we’ve not seen before. Citizens are urging their governments to address one of the most pressing challenges of our time."

WindEurope is the voice of the wind industry, actively promoting wind power in Europe and worldwide, working to raise awareness of the benefits of wind and enhancing social acceptance, according to its official website.

Global Wind Day, which started in 2007 and became "global" in 2009, is a coordinated action between WindEurope and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and national associations to introduce the general public to wind energy.
