Basketball World Cup: USA beat Turkey 93-92 in overtime

Heartbreak for Turkey as they miss several big changes -- including 4 consecutive free-throws -- to beat mighty Team USA

Team USA defeated Turkey 93-92 in overtime at the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup Group E game on Tuesday.

The match at Oriental Sports Center in China's Shanghai, the match extended to overtime when the score was 81-81 at the end of the regular time.

The first big chance came to Turkey at the end of the regular time, as they needed to defend against USA, leading by 2 points with 12 seconds left.

However, Sertac Sanli fauled Jayson Tatum at the 3-pt line with only 0.1 second to play. Tatum made 2/3 free throws to equalize the score at 81-81 and send the game to overtime.

In the overtime period, Turkey once again showed resilience and managed to take a 89-84 lead. But the Team USA came back on a 7-0 run to lead 91-89.

Despite, once again leading the match 92-91, Turkey missed four consecutive free-throws, Dogus Balbay and Cedi Osman both came up empty handed from the charity stripe.

Khris Middleton was fauled with 2.1 seconds left to go in the match, made both free throws to give Team USA the lead and the win.


Turkey's top scorer was Ersan Ilyasova with 23 points while top scorers of USA were Middleton with 15 points and Kemba Walker with 14 points.

The loss meant Turkey the sixth consecutive heartbreak against USA, while USA kept their unbeaten run in major tournaments, which is currently at 13 years.
