The head of Afghanistan's boxing federation was shot dead in the capital Kabul on Sunday, an official confirmed.

Ferdous Faramurz, spokesman for the Afghan National Police in Kabul, told Anadolu Agency that Hamidullah Hamidi, secretary general of Afghanistan Boxing Federation, was gunned down by unknown assailants in the Khushal Khan area on Sunday morning.

With no immediate claim of responsibility for the deadly assault, the police spokesman said an investigation have been launched to determine the killers and motives behind the killing.

The General Directorate of Physical Fitness and Sports has also confirmed the incident.

In a statement, it said Hamidi, a prominent federation figure who had also served as head of the taxation department at the Ministry of Finance, was targeted when he was on his way to office.

Last month, Mina Mangal, a prominent female journalist was shot dead in the city in the broad daylight.
