An Indian man was arrested Tuesday during a live broadcast after he confessed to murdering his girlfriend in an interview, drawing comparisons to a pivotal scene in the 2019 movie "The Joker" starring Joaquin Phoenix in the leading role.

27-year-old Maninder Singh went to the News18 office in India's northern city of Chandigarh and told a cameraman he wanted to "confess," according to The BBC.

After being taken to the studio, he told the presenter of the show that he had killed his girlfriend, Sarbjit Kaur, because the victim's family objected to an inter-caste marriage.

Singh also added that he felt compelled to confess because the police had been harassing his family.

The victim's body was found on Jan. 1 in a Chandigarh hotel where the couple had checked into two days earlier and Singh had been on the run ever since, according to the Hindustan Times.

At the end of the interview, Indian police were seen escorting Singh into a van.

A local police officer told the BBC it was likely the man wanted his confession to be aired live in an effort to garner sympathy.

Additionally, Singh is suspected of murdering his previous girlfriend, but is on bail as the investigation is still ongoing.
