A Rwandan court sentenced a woman to 15 years in prison Thursday for using her YouTube channel with the intent to incite a public uprising.

Yvonne Idamange was convicted on six counts at the High Court in the Rwandan capital Kigali, including incitement to violence and insurrection, denigrating genocide commemoration artifacts and spreading rumors. The court also fined her the equivalent of US$2,000.

The court said the 42-year-old published several videos on her YouTube channel with the intent to cause an insurrection and tarnish the image of the government and the country’s leadership.

The prosecution said Idamange also spread falsehoods through videos posted on her YouTube channel, which had around 18,900 subscribers.

It said the mother of four had also made false and disparaging claims about Rwandan President Paul Kagame, including issuing a bogus death announcement on him.

Idamange, who survived the 1994 Rwandan genocide against the Tutsis, also claimed that the government had turned genocide memorial sites in the country into tourist attractions.
