A Spanish soldier died during NATO's Saber Strike 2024 maneuvers in Poland, the Spanish army said on Monday.

In a statement, the Spanish army announced that the corporal died on the training ground in Bemowo Piskie, in the central Warmian-Masurian region of Poland.

The incident reportedly occurred during a tactical fire exercise.

"At this moment of great sadness for everyone, we want to express our sincere condolences and unconditional support to his family and colleagues. Your memory and dedication to the country will forever remain in our hearts. Rest in peace," the statement said.

The El Independiente website reported that the deceased soldier was 43 years old, the father of two daughters and was from Ecuador. He joined the Spanish army in 2004 and was stationed in a unit in Ceuta.

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez offered his condolences to the relatives of the deceased. "I would like to express my sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the Spanish corporal who died today in an accident in Poland during NATO maneuvers. Rest in peace," Sanchez said.
