Amid escalating violence, the Taliban in Afghanistan killed at least 25 Afghan security forces, officials and local media said on Wednesday.

The assaults took place in northern Kunduz and southern Uruzgan provinces.

Safiullah Amere, the deputy chairman of Kunduz provincial council, told Anadolu Agency that the insurgents stormed a number of check posts in the restive Dasth-e-Archi district late Tuesday.

He confirmed at least 13 security forces were killed and seven others injured, with three missing following the coordinated raid by the insurgents.

Separately in restive Uruzgan, at least 12 police officers were killed in identical Taliban assaults early Wednesday, the local Salam Afghanistan radio reported.

The Taliban took responsibility for both attacks. In a statement, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed vowed to have inflicted heavy losses on the government forces.

A day earlier, at least 11 Afghan police officers were killed as the Taliban insurgents stormed the northern Baghlan province.

The latest surge in violence came amid renewed efforts to revive the stalled peace talks.
