Africa nears 4M COVID-19 cases

Death toll tops 104,000 while 3.49M patients recovered, says Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention

The number of coronavirus cases in Africa has reached over 3.91 million, the African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said in an update on Wednesday.

At least 104,382 people have died of complications related to the virus, said the centers, which are based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital.

The continent has seen nearly 3.5 million patients recover, according to the update.

Of the five geographic regions on the continent, Southern Africa remained the hardest hit with 1.8 million cases and 56,800 deaths to date.

But the region also has the highest number of recoveries, now standing at 1.7 million.

North Africa has seen 1.2 million cases, East Africa 409,200, West Africa 391,700, and Central Africa 104,600.

At least 33,100 people have died of the virus in North Africa, 7,600 in East Africa, 5,000 in West Africa, and 1,800 in Central Africa.

Several African countries have received vaccines from the COVAX Facility for fair distribution, including Rwanda, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Angola, DR Congo, Kenya, and Gambia.
