A UN peacekeeper was killed and four others seriously wounded by an explosive device Saturday in northeastern Mali, the UN Mission (MINUSMA) said.

The mission said the incident occurred near Tessalit that is close to the Algerian border.

“A MINUSMA peacekeeper died today after his convoy struck an improvised explosive device in Tessalit, Kidal region, in the early afternoon, with four others seriously injured,” the statement said, without indicating the nationality of the deceased.

“This incident is a sad reminder of the permanent danger that hangs over our peacekeepers and of the sacrifices made for peace in Mali,” said Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of (MINUSMA) El-Ghassim Wane.

Condemning the attack, Wane paid tribute to the soldier who died and wished a speedy and full recovery to the injured, who he said were evacuated for necessary care.

“Today's cowardly attack only strengthened MINUSMA's determination to support Mali and its people in their quest for peace and stability,” he added.

In April, four Chadian MINUSMA peacekeepers were killed when militants attacked their camp in Aguelhok, also in northeastern Mali.

Deployed to Mali in 2013, the UN mission has registered 145 deaths as of Aug. 31, according to UN data.
